Why teach your dog to sit?

Training your dog to sit is one of the most basic and important commands that you can teach them. It is a great way to get their attention, and it can be used in a variety of situations, such as when you are crossing the street, getting in the car, or greeting people.

There are a few different methods that you can use to train your dog to sit. One of the most popular methods is called the lure and reward method. This method involves using a treat to lure your dog into a sitting position.

It is also a polite behaviour in general and a good starting point for a lot of exercises.

Follow the 6 simple steps below to get started with training your dog how to sit -

  • Step 1

Begin the training, by standing in front of your pup with one of our tasty soft crumble bites in your hand.

  • Step 2

Now move the treat from the end of their nose in an arc over their head while they are standing. this

will encourage them to look up and put their bottom on the floor.

  • Step 3

Their bottom will touch the floor as they follow the treat. Make sure you reward them with the treat

when this happens.

  • Step 4

Once your pup has the hang of this, repeat previous steps without a treat. Remember to still verbally

reward when they sit on the floor.

  • Step 5

Once your pup is reliably sitting, introduce your verbal cue "sit" then use your hand gesture and

reward them.

  • Step 6

Over time and with practice, they will begin to sit after hearing the word "sit"

Here are some additional tips to help you train your dog to sit:

  • Be patient. It takes time and patience to train a dog to sit. Don't get discouraged if your dog doesn't get it right away. Just keep practicing and they will eventually learn.

  • Be consistent. Use the same method every time you train your dog to sit. If you use different methods, your dog will get confused and it will take longer for them to learn.

  • Be positive. Use positive reinforcement when training your dog to sit. This means rewarding them with treats, praise, or affection when they do something you want them to do. Avoid using punishment, as this can make your dog fearful and less likely to learn.

With a little patience and consistency, you can train your dog to sit in no time!
